Transport for London’s Lane Rental scheme has come into effect today. Under the new legislation, TfL can charge utility firms in the capital and their contractors up to £2,500 per day to carry out road works in congested areas and at peak times of the day.
The purpose is to encourage utility firms to carry out street works outside peak traffic hours, reducing congestion. TfL also stated that any works carried out by them would also be included in the scheme and 70% of its own works are carried out at off peak times.
